Corning, NY, 1/25/60: “Space Window: A picture-window capable of withstanding temperatures approaching 2,000 degrees (F) is installed in the side of the Project Mercury space capsule in which one of America’s seven astronauts will rocket into orbit. Details on the window, which the astronauts themselves requested as an alternate to portholes and a periscope, were announced today by the subcontractor, the Corning Glass Works.”
